Missing Sherlock and Watson

This isn't exactly about my countdown the the fated and long awaited return of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in the BBC drama Sherlock with the beginning of Series Three.

This is about the mustache.
Watson really let himself go after losing Sherlock....

Okay, I lied.
It is about my torturous wait since I saw the Reichenbach Fall on Netflix over a year ago.

Sherlock very clearly JUMPED. OFF. THE. BUILDING.
How in the heck is he supposed to come back from that!?
And they're supposed to come back January 1 of next year. Soooo, less than a month.

Not much longer to wait.
I want to know how he not only duped Moriarty's hitmen, but Watson, and the rest of London. After all the theories I have read online, still, nothing seems realistic.

More than the way he lived, I'm just ready for one of my favorite shows to come back after so long. I miss the wit and writing and the cases... I just want the show to come back!

Because how can you go on without these losers?

The Day of the Doctor

So this happened.

My my my.

SO, Moffat definitely changed some primary Doctor Who "mythology" and rules in case any Doctor should meet the Doctor.

The biggest most shocking thing: Gallifrey was NOT destroyed! It's stuck in a picture. A picture with two names: 1) Gallifrey Falls; 2) No More. Now, throughout the special, we see that "Gallifrey Falls" comes from the fact that this is the big battle that was occurring right before the Doctor pressed the big red button that destroyed his home planet and all the Timelords and children on it. It's called "No More" because that's what the 8.5th Doctor says and blows into a random wall before he bust through some Daleks and out of the line of fire to destroy the Daleks so the world won't burn, but Gallifrey along with it.

Yes, I call him 8.5. I still don't really understand who he is. I know he's the one that the Doctor tries to forget, and doesn't talk about, but, there's an Eight and there's a Nine. Nine is definitely after the destruction of the Timelords' home planet. So, Eight-point-Five it is.

But it's odd to see how similar the Doctors are even though they are so different!

I particularly enjoyed when all 13 Doctors swooped in to save Gallifrey---or contain it in a photo to be released when it is safe.

We got to see Peter Capaldi in the show for the first time! Or his eyes anyway. None the less, it was exciting.

Anywhoo...
I can't wait for the season to start up again! Yes, we'll be seeing the end of Matt Smith soon, but that's okay because he was never my favorite...
I'm excited for the new start, and a new personality/age/maturity for the Doctor.

Bring it on!

Move On

I've got a bone to pick with a couple of my television shows:
They're not moving.
The story doesn't seem to really be going anywhere. It's just a lot of side story lines.

That's right, How I Met Your Mother. I'm talking to you.

Now, I haven't seen last night's episode yet, but this season has been within TWO DAYS. That's not an exaggeration. It's still the weekend of Barney and Robin's wedding, but each episode has only been a few hours later past the las episode. Nothing is happening. Nothing is moving the over arching story-line. At first it was no biggie. It was entertaining. Now, I'm just tired of waiting. That's why I haven't thrown a fit to see the last one yet.

And then there's Once Upon a Time, which hasn't been as bad, but...
They're still on the island. They're still looking for Henry. They're still fighting among themselves.

The character's have moved on a bit.
I mean, they did find Neal/Bae. He wasn't dead, yay. Hook and Neal are now in a heated love triangle with Emma, and they're not hiding it. David got a fatal poison, then Hook helped him cure it, now he can never leave the island. Regina left the Charmings for Rumple to find Henry. Ariel's giving us some insight into Storybrook...

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it. I just don't want the whole season to be about getting Henry back. There's no movement. We want Storybrook! I miss the Enchanted Forest, too.

Come on, shows. I love you for a reason. Give me some movement!

The Walkers

Alright. I avoided it as long as possible. I couldn't hold out.

I'm addicted to the Walking Dead.

Everyone who works at the optometrist office that I work at watches this show. They talked about it constantly. Honestly, I got sick of having all those conversations going over my head, so my roommate and I decided to start the show on Netflix...

It took us maybe two weeks to watch everything on Netflix, and considering we both go to school full-time, work almost full time at the office, and I have a job at the newscast on campus, this is quite a feat!

I'm now waiting a week to watch new episodes on Sunday like everyone else.
Netflix spoils you. You don't have to wait between episodes...it's just "Play Next Episode."

Anywho. Spoilers.

We're now waiting for Daryl, Michonne, Ty, and that alcoholic guy to return to the jail with the meds
from the vet college, and for Rick to return with the food and stuff from that neighborhood. No Carol since Rick exiled her for killing Ty's GF and that other guy like Simba and Pride Rock did to Kovu in Lion King 2.

Now, I haven't read the graphic novels, but I know the television show has taken certain artistic liberties with characters and events. It makes me wonder if the comic is the reason for Carol going loco. I thought her character was whiny and annoying, and that surely she was be killed off or receed into the background once they "found" Sophia. But no. She went crazy.

AND I think that little girl in Carol was molding to be able to take care of herself is CRAZY. Her little sister even said she ain't right in the head. Carol sent her into a cell with a knife, with a bunch of sick people that are more than likely going to die. How do we know she won't do like Carol and kill people before they die from the sickness?

Then there's Glen. Glen, my dear. He's been getting a tad on my nerves since the Governor went crazy on Maggie, but I still love him and he CAN NOT die.

But Daryl is my favorite. You know, I had a feeling when his character returned from hunting to fin out that is crazy brother was handcuffed to a rooftop in a zombie infested Atlanta that I would like him. Not that I liked him at the time, it took a while, but I had a feeling. You can kill Rick, Carol, Sasha, Ty, CARL, even Judith, but leave Daryl be!

And, I'm now counting down the days to Sunday like everyone else.

Happy October/Doctor Who

It's October!
This is my one of my favorite times of the year for three reasons:
  1. My birthday! (The day before Halloween)
  2. Halloween: Adults still get to dress up!
  3. The day after Halloween marks the beginning of the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years season and Christmas music is right around the corner!

So, in celebration of Halloween, I wanted to carve pumpkins, like I do every year. THEN, my roommate and fiancé say they've never carved pumpkins before. Never. Naturally, I made them, and made fun of their "deprived childhood" the whole time.

They enjoyed it. My roommate made the B.A.B., and my fiancé made the face.

I, of course, had to get more creative and fan-based, so I made the TARDIS shooting through time and space. It turned out pretty good for a free hand design and a rotted pumpkin. (I waited a little too long to pick some up.)

Speaking of the TARDIS, the 50th anniversary
special is coming up next month! I heard they're showing in in theatres in Europe. THEN I heard that they were doing it in America, but only the big cities. BUT one of my fellow newscast workers alerted me that they WILL be showing it in OKC at my favorite movie theater! It'll be a few days after the big premiere, but that's okay since I normally have to wait a few days to see the new episodes later. I'm thrilled. Doctor Who night out!

I'll take lots of pictures. Hopefully people dress up...

Happy October!

The Shows Have Returned!

The shows are returning, and I barely know what to do with myself! I'd forgotten how difficult it was too keep up with so many shows, but somehow, I'm getting by just fine...

Anywhoo! Here's what's going on in all my shows. Recaps, theories, rage. But as always...

How I Met Your Mother

So, we're five episodes in, and they are moving painstakingly slow. The episodes are all taking place the weekend of Barney and Robin's wedding. They're at a hotel and each episode we get a countdown of how many hours until the wedding, but we're all waiting for it to happen already, right?

Lilly has met the future Mrs. Mosby on a train to the wedding, but after they get off the train, we don't see her again(in current time, at least). Lilly's miserable without Marshall and the baby(he's on route to the wedding in a Hummer with a stranger) and has not only resorted to Marshpillow again, but has hired one of the bartenders to make sure she never doesn't have a drink in her hand.
Ted is going through a crisis being at the wedding of one of his best friends and his other friend who he still has on and off feelings about. (Although, thankfully, they're not spending too much energy on his unrequited feelings.) I used to be soooo Team Ted  & Robin (Tobin? Red?), but they've changed so much, I just want him to get over her. Which he could...if the writers would let him meet the mother already! They did have a little future scene between the two of them in which we see happy Ted with Wife, but still.

Barney knows about the awkward handholding between Ted and Robin in the rain, but after getting back at him by making him do lots of ridiculous "Best Man" jobs, replacing him with who Barney calls the Karate Kid, and an awkward handholding of their own, they're BFFs again.

We continue to watch and wait for the mother to enter the scene...

Once Upon a Time

Our heroes have tracked dear Henry to wonderland to rescue him from the evil Peter Pan.

(I don't get it either.)

Rumple has gone off on his own, deciding to find Henry his own way, but he seems to be going a little off track. He's seeing apparitions of Belle and having flashbacks due to a doll one of the lost boys gave him. Once again, we see the power of magic calling to him, and pushing him towards doing the wrong thing. Is it his cowardice? His obsession with power? I don't know, but without Belle around, he could be losing his humanity...again. He already killed Tamara.

Charming, Snow, Emma, Regina, and Captain Eyeliner, are trekking through the forest to find Pan. Peter is taunting Emma by showing up and providing "help" in the form of a map that will only show the way once Emma admits who she "truly is." After a pointless session of admitting to the empty parchment that she was the "savior," nothing happened, and Regina resorts to magic, placing a tracking spell of the parchment.

Of course the villainous Pan sees that coming, and makes it lead them into an ambush. Pan calls it a warning and peaces out. No one dies, but Charming gets scratched by an arrow flying by him, one laced with poison. Deadly poison.

After a tisk with mom and dad, Emma admits to Snow, and to herself, that she still feels like a lost abandoned orphan, even if she's found her parents....aaaand the map shows up. *tears from everyone*
Let's go! #savehenry

Glee

Where do I begin? First we have Klaine back together, and the big proposal, and Rachel got Fanny, and Beatles music everywhere...!
Then we have the tribute episode.

I am not lying when I say I sobbed through it. Those actors were not acting in this episode. They we mourning a friend and colleague as their characters were also mourning a friend.
   Ryan Murphy told USA Today
"I've never seen a crew that can't continue shooting because they've left the room sobbing. It was very hard."
The sendoff was great. They didn't get into why, he died, but as Kurt said in the episode, they focused on how he lived.
If you're a fan and haven't watched it, do. It's worth the tears.

OkieFunk hits the Blogging Class

Dr. Kurt Hochenauer, journalist and English professor, came into our class to give us all insight into the world of blogging from a successful stand point.
His blog, Okie Funk, is a blog with "populist and liberal information and ideas," and it all started because he felt the desire to fill the need for news from more than just our conservative sources. He has an average of 3,000 unique visitors per month, and has been mentioned throughout news in our area.

One thing I've taken from his blog is that it is equal points journalism and opinion. His posts clearly have a voice, unlike many written news post we see. For example, he has a post called Beware: Pension Cuts Loom For State Employees, and in this post he gives his ideas of what he believes will happen; specifically using the word "I."
"I suspect the answer to that would be probably yes, in most cases, but the change will begin reducing the money pool in the defined-benefits plans, thus precipitating an eventual crisis that will lead to even more cuts."
He also has a polls (see most recent to right) run on his page that gives viewers the option of leaving their opinion on the question, but even the answers available lean in his frame of thought.

He gave us lots to think about as he went into how he got into the world of blogging, and although his information was from a political blog, there were things that all of us could learn.

He discussed formats and layouts and different places to create blogs. He also talked about how keeping the layout simple and easy to read is important.

There were two main things I took from him as far as ways to have a successful blog:

  1. Be Unique
  2. Good Writing

Josh Rushing Comes to UCO

Josh Rushing and some of us
from Ucentral News
Josh Rushing speaking at the UCO Media Ethics Conference
This past week, UCO hosted a Media Ethics Conference, where key speakers came to our school and did speeches and panels for students in the media to come learn from them and sharpen their ethics ideas. My favorite of the speakers was Josh Rushing, host of Fault Lines on Al Jazeera America.

Meredith Marney, UCentral News, interviews
Josh Rushing

He spoke to us about his journey to for the public, to keep them informed and updated.
where he is now, a reporter and host of a show on a prominent network that isn't afraid to ask the RIGHT questions, from being an American Marine. There were some key things he said that spoke with me: one, “do the right things for the right reasons.” He talked about how he learned this in the Marines, and how in journalism, ethics can sometimes be blurred. It’s important to ask the right questions, and tell the public what they need to know when they need to know it, instead of shielding them because it’s easier. The second thing that really spoke to me was “Be a story-teller and a content creator.” This really struck home to me since I am a producer, and we write the majority of the show as well as assign the reporters their stories. I want to grow to be able to tell stories with my writing and not have a lot of filler stories that don’t really help anyone. This could apply to news as well as blogging as a journalist.

I feel very fortunate that we had the opportunity to hear this man speak. He was also very supportive
of us student broadcasters. Some of us were live-tweeting the speech and took pictures and interviews with him and posted them. About an hour later, every one of my post, as well as many others, were either Favorited or Retweeted, which meant a lot to every one of us.

But Really...This is How He Met Her

And so, we now embark of the end of the world of How I Met Your Mother. The mother was shown to us at the finale of the last season, and we now begin to see what really happened, and how Ted met the kids' mother.

Last night was the big premiere...and I missed it. After the newscast last night, I had to go grocery shopping and missed it. HOWEVER, I will be watching it tonight. I have my ways. And I will be recapping and gushing my thoughts on it afterward. Be prepared, friends!

Hiatus

I dread the word. A hiatus is a thing all TV show fans hate, whether it be a week or two of no new episodes, or the break between one season and another. Regardless, they suck. And most of us have been right in the middle of a bunch right now. Luckily, the seasons will begin soon and we can get back to our shows.
These are some of the shows I'm looking forward to watching/blogging about and a little recap on what we saw last...

Sundays

  • Once Upon a Time - So, Henry had just be taken away by the evil humans into the portal in the water, everyone thinks Neil/Bae is dead, Rumple left Belle behind to find his grandson while keeping her and the town safe because he wants to BE A BETTER MAN and finally take care of his family, Captain Eyeliner, Evil Regal, and the Charmings climbed aboard the Jolly Roger to follow the evils to Neverland to take on Peter Pan. Oh, and I hear a little mermaid is making her way to Storybrook's shores...

Mondays

  • How I Met Your Mother - We know who the mother is now...or what she looks like at least. I'm not as interested in her story as I am in the gang getting into their usual shenanigans. And I truly find Barney and Robin's relationship wonderful and awkward.

Thursdays

  • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland *NEW* I don't even know what to say, but if Once Upon a Time is good, then I'm sure this spin off will be, too. Bring it on.

  • Glee - BLAINE HAD A RINGBOX BEHIND HIS BACK. It's the last thing we see. Seriously!? But there is the whole thing with the death of Cory Monteith. Terrible, terrible thing. I'm very curious how they are going to write that into the show. And the whole Demi Lovato joining the cast for a spin. We shall see, eh?

  • The Big Bang Theory - I love intelligent comedy. Let's see, we left off with Leonard leaving for a big science-y voyage again. Penny and Leonard are back together, Sheldon and Amy are...whatever they are. Oh! And Raj can talk to girls now. Let the hilarity ensue!

Then you have the shows that we still have a while to wait on.

  • Game of Thrones - March. Man, that show is so messed up. Pain, I'm telling you. We'll talk closer to premiere time...

  • Doctor Who - November...which I have to wait until after airing and watch it online later... JOHN HURT. What? I don't even understand where he's supposed to fit in the timeline. Clara...meh. I'm not a total fan of the show being all about the Companion since Moffat took over, but I can handle her a lot better than Amy... And I KNOW Matt Smith isn't quite done yet, but PETER CAPALDI.

*Not my pictures or GIFs...not that talented.*

We're the Millers

Lately, I've been hearing all this buzz about the movie We're the Millers all over the place: Facebook, Twitter, word of mouth. Some of my aquaintences have been talking about how they're going to see it for the second and third time, and that it is simply hilarious.
So, one day I got to leave work before the late hours of the night, I pulled my fiancé along to my favorite movie theater to see this terribly funny movie.

(We're the Millers Movie Trailer)

imdb.com
Now, though I will admit, I had a few laughs, I believe this movie is vastly overrated.

It's a tale of a drug dealer, played by Jason Sudeikis, who gets roped into becoming a drug smuggler by his jerk boss. No choice. He happens upon the idea to bring together a fake family for him to travel with so him crossing the border from Mexico doesn't seem so suspicious. He and his "family," which is composed of a stripper, a runaway, and a sheltered kid that lives in his apartment building, get aboard a flashy RV and embark on a journey to bring drugs to America.

Mostly, it's what you'd expect it to be. The only thing that really surprised me was that they got to the drug keepers place and black fairly quickly. Kudos for that. The movie makers used the rest of the time to allow the family to get into all types of trouble.

*Spoiler Alert*
The Millers run into another family in the line to get back to America. It reminded me a lot of the movie RV, with Robin Williams, taking his family on a family vacation in an RV. Given, that storyline wasn't a part of a major drug smuggle, but a lot was similar. Characters: Man, woman, girl, boy, there was the other family in their RV that was almost obsessed with becoming friends, there was the RV mechanics issues that made the families have to stop overnight and be forced to bond. I guess you can't really come up with all that much new stuff for a movie set inside a moving vehicle.

Also, there was the issue of the drug dealer chasing the Millers, and the fact that the RV was STUFFED with drugs. Impossibly so. Then throw in the fact that Sudeikis's boss decides to give him a deadline to bring in the product.

The movie was entertaining, and I did laugh. But, like I said before, this movie has been vastly overrated. Everything has been done before (except maybe Jennifer Aniston's strip tease in the car shop) which made the movie pretty predictable. Now, Roberts and Anniston's characters--playing mom and sister-- were teaching Poulter's character--playing brother-- how to kiss, was new, however, them getting caught? Predictable.

I did like "Nawmsayin," a.k.a. Scotty P. He was ridiculous.

So all in all, I liked the movie, but it was nothing special.

And that's my take on We're the Millers: funny, but not hilarious.
Your opinion? Let's chat: Comment!

Blog Review: This Girl's Food

This is the part where I review a blog that's been around a lot longer than me, and knows what they're doing as opposed to be me being a beginner. Ah, well, let's have a go.

This Girl's Food

The photo to the right is an entry from her blog...and it looks absolutely delicious. I really just want to take all the recipes on this blog and spend a day making each and every one of them, even the ones with nuts(which I hate). Someone would eat them!

One thing I really like about this blog is that she has something to the side that has every genre of recipe she has (i.e. desserts, appetizers, breakfasts, etc.) so you can get right to the recipes you want instead of just having to scroll anything you've seen in the past. (right)

The weakness I find is that there is a lot of family talk and pictures in her recipe posts. As a new follower, I'm more interested in the recipes and foods, not her family holidays and outings before the description of the food. I'd prefer less family pictures and more food pictures, but that's not for me to decide. It's her blog, so of course she wants to blog about her family that she's so proud of.

I might, too, but as a human, I'm selfish and don't care about anyone but myself. (That's a total exaggeration. I do care. But you get my point.) I tend to scroll past the family photos and go straight to the food photos and recipes. Yum!

All in all, this is a blog I would recommend, if only for the photos of the food. Beware! They will make you hungry.

(All these photos are snapshots of her blog!)

For the Love of the Art

Greetings, all.

I'm Tonico, and I'm a movie lover and a big television show fan. I'm also one of those people who analyzes every part of even the ones I love. I'm talking writing, editing, acting, the whole thing.

You see, one day, I'm going to work on a show or a movie. I'm going to be a big part of it, and I'm going to love it. The only thing is, I don't know which part of it intrigues me most, what part I love most, or which part I'm best at.

This blog is me analyzing, critiquing, and fangirling over the popular stuff and my favorite stuff, learning what works, figuring out which styles I love, using my experience in acting, film, writing, and editing to converse about the finer aspects of entertainment instead of "It was good," or "It was bad." (Plus, this also gives me an excuse to go see movies and watch TV in the name of progression.) But, mostly, it's because I love it all, and this is just an excuse to talk about it in excruciating detail.

It's great timing, too, because the beginning of show season is on the horizon!

So, here it is: Tonico's Takes.
My take on the entertainment of the big and small screens.
